[DVD] Jack and Jill vs. the World (2008)

You Don't Like?

A romantic comedy with opposites attracting each other are a dime a dozen, and writer-director Vanessa Parise counts on the eye candy in Freddie Prinze Jr. and Taryn Manning to deliver the goods. You know the usual routine where a serious, rigid man who lives life according to his own rules, get his orderliness thrown upside down when he falls in love with a free-spirited, independent girl who starts to show him the wonderful world of randomness. They bunk in together, and drafts a manifesto to live their lives by, only for the lady to be harbouring a deep, dark secret about her health, for fear of the truth that will make her man bolt out of the front door.

You can't come to expect much from the acting department, suffice to say that the leads share enough chemistry to make this film a tad enjoyable, even though it treaded on the usual formulaic themes. Comedy comes in the form of supporting characters providing best advice to their friends, and one such role has Vanessa Parise in it as well. It's also about the fact that relationships are hard work, not that lovey-dovey nonsense that we get bombarded by the media or some fluffy fairy tale notions, but work that has to take two hands to clap to make it happen, and for the long term.
