Notorious

Cool Like That

With the likes of Ray (Charles) and Johnny Walk the Line Cash, it wouldn't be long before Hollywood executives pounce on to make a film about the larger than life (literally as well) persona of gangsta rapper Christopher Wallace aka Biggie Smalls aka The Notorious B.I.G. The conspiracy theories surrounding his abruptly shortened lifespan, his multiple relationships, the East coast West coast music rivalry and his less than stellar growing up years, are all fodder for a biography that just loves to examine how anyone from the depths of society could rise to the top, with fame and fortune all thrown in.

The ensemble cast playing real life musicians also make this movie a draw, where you have Sean "Puffy" Combs, Faith Evans, Lil Kim and the late Tupac Shakur amongst others who make an impact in Wallace's life. Only key songs get some airtime in the film, used to mark the milestones in his musical career. Jamal Woolard in starring in his debut film, has very big shoes to fill but never for a minute looked or felt uncomfortable playing an iconic character, probably because he could have been given some advice by Angela Bassett, who stars as Wallace's mom, and the actress herself one time making audiences round the world sit up with her heartfelt performance as Tina Turner in What's Love Got To Do With It.

It's a straightforward biography told in a very plain manner, and for those who want to have a complete background knowledge before they hit the cinemas, then you just might want to Wiki it, but don't say I didn't warn you as the narrative of the film seemed to have taken a huge leaf out of that.
