[DVD] Beck (2010)

Mongolian Chop Squad

One of my favourite films of the year, the Japanese DVD editions have this specially packaged with tons of extras, but alas there is that distinct lack of English subtitles. So I guess it's a trade off between extras for that subtitled film, until such time I can pick up the language. Which will take forever.

You can read my review of the film here.

The Region 3 (although it can be played when tested on a Region 1 locked player) DVD by Innoform Media presents the film in an anamorphic widescreen format, although at times the picture quality was lacking in crispness, though without the pops, cackles and hiss. Audio is in its original Japanese language track presented in Dolby Digital 2.0, although I would have preferred the 5.1 option to really put you smack into the middle of a rock concert each time Beck and other groups perform, especially for the finale playoff, but that was not to be. Subtitles are available in English and Mandarin, with scene selection over 16 chapters.

For fans of the film, do note that there's a woeful lack of extras in this edition, although the only consolation here is an English subtitled film that you can watch repeatedly if you can't understand the Japanese language. As Special Features there's only a Trailer (1:55) presented in letterbox format, and a Photo Gallery of 11 stills. And perhaps just for the fanboys, if you take a closer look at the spine of the DVD sleeve, you'll see the anime version of the band members right there.
